SpellTrainer is made by one person. Write, and you will get a reply from that person.

When something is wrong, it helps to know:

which iPad it is (Settings ▸ General ▸ About ▸ Model Name),
which iPadOS version,
what you did, and what happened instead.

Please do not send anything about the child — not her name, not her age, not her work. The app does not collect any of it and neither does this address.

What you need to run it

An iPad with iPadOS 17 or later: iPad 6th generation (2018) or later, iPad Air 3rd generation (2019) or later, iPad mini 5th generation (2019) or later, or any iPad Pro from 2017. There is no iPhone, Mac, Android or web version.
An Apple Pencil. The writing area ignores fingers deliberately.
No internet connection, except for speech recognition on older iPads.

The grown-ups area asks me a sum

That is the gate, and it is meant to be there. Tap Grown-ups, answer the multiplication on the screen, and the settings open. The question changes every time, so it cannot be memorised by a child who watches you do it once.

Everything that adds — a word, a list, a whole week of spellings — is outside the gate. Only settings, deletion and the backup are behind it.

Adding your own words

One at a time: Words ▸ choose a list ▸ +. English, what it means, and a picture if you want one. An example sentence is optional; if you leave it empty, the button that speaks it simply is not there.

A whole list at once: Words ▸ New word set. Give it a name, then paste one word per line:

Any of =, ,, ;, :, a tab, or a dash with spaces round it will separate the parts. The app shows you what it read before anything is saved, including any line it could not use.

Your lists live in My Words, which is the fourth place on her home screen.

Finding a list

There are 172 of them. On the screen where she picks one, and on your own Words screen, there is a search box that takes either the name of a list or a word inside one. A misspelling still finds it: typing elefant brings back the list that teaches elephant.

Backing up and restoring

Grown-ups ▸ Backup. One file, holding everything: her words, her answers, her handwriting, her medals and her whole history.

Restoring offers two choices. Merge only ever adds — where the file and the iPad both have a word, the one already on the iPad wins, and you are told which were skipped. Replace puts the iPad back exactly as the file describes it, and what was there before is gone.

Keep the file somewhere you would keep a photograph. There is no copy on any server, because there is no server.

Deleting

One word or one list: Words ▸ hold the tile ▸ delete. Her history for that word is kept; the word is gone.
Clear the practice record: Grown-ups ▸ Clear the practice record. It takes every session and every attempt, and leaves her learned words, her tree and her medals standing. It asks first.
Start this iPad again for someone new: Grown-ups ▸ Start this iPad again for someone new. It takes those three as well, so the next child begins at nothing. It asks first, and the question names what goes.
Everything: delete the app. Everything it holds goes with it, immediately and completely.

Both of the middle two keep every word and every list.

Reminders

They are off until you switch them on, in Grown-ups ▸ Reminders. The iPad asks your permission at that moment rather than on the first launch. Daily, weekly, or neither.

A reminder is addressed to you rather than to her, and carries no streak, no count of days missed and nothing to break. A day she has already practised on does not produce one.

Some things it does not do

These are decisions rather than gaps, so it is worth saying them here:

It does not mark handwriting for neatness. It reads the word and tells her whether the spelling is right.
It does not hold more than one child. One iPad, one child, one record.
Forty words that sound like another word are kept out of Listen and Say it. Two and to cannot be told apart by ear, so asking for one of them by ear has no right answer. They are still in Practise.
It never links a child out to anywhere, including to this page.

Privacy

The full policy is at /privacy, and it is the same text the app shows under Grown-ups ▸ Privacy.

The short version: nothing about her leaves the iPad, except that on an iPad which cannot recognise speech on its own, iPadOS sends the audio from Say it to Apple. Her handwriting never leaves, on any model.
