Privacy

Last updated 23 September 2026. SpellTrainer is used by a child. This describes exactly what it keeps, where it keeps it, and the one thing that ever leaves the iPad.

What is kept

On this iPad, and nowhere else:

• The words — the English word, what it means, its picture, and any example sentence.
• Her answers — what she wrote or said, what the app read it as, whether it was right, how long it took, and when.
• Her handwriting — the actual strokes, so an adult can look back at what she wrote.
• Her sessions — when she practised, in which mode, and with which set of words.
• Times the app could not read her — kept apart from her answers, because they are the app's mistakes rather than hers.
• Settings — the voice, how fast it speaks, the meaning language, and whether the grown-ups question is switched on.

No name is asked for. No email address, no date of birth, no account, no sign-in. The app does not know who is using it.

What leaves the iPad

One thing, and only in one case. When she speaks a word in Say it mode, the app asks the iPad to recognise what she said. Most iPads can do this by themselves and nothing is sent anywhere. Where an iPad cannot, iPadOS sends that audio to Apple to be recognised, and Apple's privacy policy governs what happens to it there. The app has no other reason to use the network and makes no other request of any kind. Her handwriting never leaves. It is read on the iPad itself, every time, on every model. There is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no crash reporting, and no third-party software of any kind in this app. Nothing is sold, shared, or collected.

What an adult can send, deliberately

An adult can export her practice records as spreadsheet files, save a backup, or share the progress report. Each of these happens only when an adult asks for it, and each goes only where that adult chooses to send it. The app never transmits any of them on its own.

Deleting

An adult can delete a word or a whole set of words from the grown-ups area, and can clear her work in either of two ways. Clearing the practice record takes every session and every attempt, and leaves her learned words, her tree and her medals standing. **Starting this iPad again for someone new** takes those three as well. Both keep every word and every list. Deleting the app removes everything it holds, immediately and completely. There is no copy anywhere else to ask about. Her handwriting is the largest thing stored, so older strokes are cleared automatically after a time. The record of what she wrote and whether it was right is kept.

Children

This app is made for young children and holds no information that could identify one. It has no account, no messaging, no social features, and no advertising.

Paying for it

The app is free to install and free for a week. After that, practising needs a subscription, and the screen that asks for one is behind the grown-ups question, where a child does not go. Apple takes the payment, not us. We never see a card number, a name, an address, or an email address. Nothing about the payment is stored on this iPad by the app, and nothing about it is sent to us — Apple tells the app only whether a subscription is running. That screen carries links to Apple's terms and to this policy, because Apple requires them. They are the only links out of the app, and they are behind the grown-ups question with everything else an adult decides. If the subscription stops, her work stays hers. Her words, the ones she has learned, her handwriting, her practice history and the backup are all still there and still hers to export. Only the practising stops.
